Police have successfully recovered a two-year-old boy who was kidnapped from Kira Municipality and the kidnapper asked for sh150m ransom.

Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the victim as Ayan Makanga, a son to Fatumah Nyakaisiki, a resident of Kireka-Kamuli in Kira Municipality.

Owoyesigyire said that Makanga’s recovery followed the arrest of the suspected kidnapper, Geoffrey Kato who had kidnapped the toddler from her mother on October 10, 2024.

“The child was taken after Kato tricked the mother, Nyakaisiki into inviting him to her home under the pretense of discussing personal matters. It is reported that while Nyakaisiki was preparing tea for the visitor (suspect), he fled the scene with the child,” Owoyesigyire said, adding;

“Later that evening, Kato sent a WhatsApp message to the mother, demanding a ransom of sh150m for the safe return of the child.”

However, Police says that the parents instead reported the matter to Kira Division Police, prompting a swift and thorough investigation led by a team from the Crime Intelligence Directorate.

The suspect is said to have been apprehended in Kigarama Village, Kasanda District, and 2-year-old Makanga was safely recovered.

“The child was found in good health and has since been reunited with the parents. The suspect is currently in police custody and will be processed for arraignment in court,” Owoyesigyire reported.

He adds: “We commend the efforts of the task team for their diligent work in resolving this case, and we also acknowledge the parents for their prompt reporting of the incident, which significantly aided the rescue efforts.”
