Twelve people have been confirmed dead and 10 retrieved alive from the Lusanja-Kiteezi landfill slide.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango has said that by 5:00pm on Saturday they had recovered 12 dead bodies and 10 people who are alive.

Onyango says that they are still going on with the search and no place will be left unturned. As police and other agencies retrieved both people who were alive and the dead bodies, there is a woman and her daughter who were found dead, forcing her husband to collapse. He was placed on oxygen support.

He noted that the landfill has been closed for a while until further notice, adding that those who have been displaced are to be relocated.

“We estimate over 1000 people to have been displaced by the garbage slide. We are to sit with the local authorities and landlords to see how many people have been buried,” Onyango said.

He added, “By this time we do not expect anybody to still be alive in the garbage slide but by around 2:00pm, a dog was rescued alive. You never know what may happen because miracles happen.”

The search and rescue were conducted by the Police, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the Ministry of Health, and Uganda Red Cross, residents, among others.

The rescued people and bodies have been rushed to Mulago Hospital and St. Stephen Hospital in Mpererwe.
