The former Speaker of the 4th Parliament, Francis Butagira, has encouraged the current Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, to stand firm and continue defending the interests of Uganda, even when it comes at a heavy cost.
Butagira made the remarks during a courtesy call at the Speaker’s residence in Nakasero, where he had gone to show solidarity, with the Speaker and encouraged her to stay focused on national service without getting distracted.
Butagira was among the Speakers that received the luxurious cars in December 2023 as part of his emoluments given to former Speakers.
Among has over the time put it that the youths protesting against her claiming she is corrupt are funded by foreign powers that got annoyed because she presided over the parliament that passed the anti-homosexuality law.
Even when the protesters are demanding the Speaker Among to resign, she says she is not ready to do so. She recently said that she will be handing over the mantle of speakership to her deputy Thomas Tayebwa come 2031, after serving for 10 years.
