Police Arrest UPDF Officer, One Woman, 10 Others in Hunt for Gangs Terrorizing Mukono

The Police in Mukono have cracked down a gang of alleged criminals who have been terrorizing parts of Mukono Central Division and the neighbouring areas.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson says the suspects include a woman, who is a bar attendant, Prossy Nakitende (30) whose side business is dealing in opium.

Other suspects include; Max Opio (26), a loader at Namanve Industrial Area, Alex Orach (26), a casual labourer, Joseph Ochen a.k.a Snake (22), Patrick Ochara (25), a brick maker, Richard Omita (34), a shoe maker and Dickson Lubanga (18), a casual worker.

The rest are; Thomas Oboth (42), Korea Bogere (40), a peasant, Steven Ebeli (28), Gerald Nabende (29) and Michael Ndeke (37), a UPDF soldier attached to Uganda Railway Line.

“In a pre-dawn operation on October 10, 2024, police arrested 12 suspects believed to be part of the notorious Japodola crew, a serial house-breaking and robbery gang terrorizing residents in Kyungu cell, Nsuube Kauga ward and Mukono central Division. Investigations are ongoing and soon we shall present them before court to answer charges which will be preferred to them,” Onyango said.

According to the crime and investigations department in Mukono Police Division, the Japodola crew has been linked to multiple cases of aggravated robbery, house breakings, and burglaries in Nabuti cell, Nassuuti, Ddandira, and Wantoni.

Police reports indicate that the gang used master keys, wires, knives, pangas, and small axes to carry out their crimes.

Onyango says that the operation was based on credible intelligence from reliable sources. The suspects, all residing in the same makeshift house, are currently detained at Mukono Police main station for further investigation.

“The police aim to restore peace in the community through thorough prosecution of the suspects and continuous operations to eliminate such criminal elements. Improved community engagement and target hardening measures are also being implemented to prevent future incidents,” he said.
