Former Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor Committed to High Court to Answer Charges of Aggravated Defilement

| NAKAWA | KYAGGWE TV | The Nakawa Chief Magistrate, Christine Nantege on Wednesday August 14, 2024 committed to the high court the former Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration, Dr. Eron Lawrence to answer charges of aggravated defilement.

Dr. Eron (57), who also doubled as the head of the Special Needs and Rehabilitation Faculty, is facing charges of aggravated defilement. It is alleged that he defiled a 16-year-old blind student whom he also infected with HIV/Aids.

The Chief Magistrate Nantege committed Dr. Eron, the resident of Jinja-Misindye Cell in Goma Division, Mukono Municipality upon the evidence pinning him adduced before court by the Senior State Attorney Eunice Mbaine.

Mbaine told the court that the inquiries in Dr. Eron’s case are complete and that the case was ready to be committed to the high court for trial. She said that on October 12, 2023, between Kyambogo University and Namugongo-Nsawo Cell in Kira Municipality, Dr. Eron, who is HIV positive sexually abused a visually impaired 16-year-old Senior Four student.

It is alleged that Dr. Eron who had offered a lift to the accused who was together with other four students with disabilities from Entebbe International Airport who were on their way back from attending a conference in Nairobi Kenya.

“Upon dropping the rest of the students, Dr. Eron remained with the victim who asked him to drop her at Tusu Petro Station in Namugongo where her relatives were to pick her but he  insisted and offered to take the victim to her home saying he had something to tell her. On their way, between Namugongo and Nsawo, Dr. Eron gave the victim a bottle of water which she took and immediately blacked out,” prosecution told court.

Before taking the water and blacking out, the victim said that she was seated in the co-driver’s seat and that Dr. Eron was the one driving but upon gaining her consciousness, she found herself in the back seat and the vehicle had been parked.

The victim said that Dr. Eron gave her a tablet to swallow saying that it was an emergency pill, yet her knicker was wet and she was filling some pain in her genitals.

 It is further alleged that when she asked him (Dr. Eron) what he had done to her, he (Dr. Eron) just kept quiet. They proceeded to the victim’s home and he dropped her there.

On the following day, the victim was taken back to school without revealing what had happened to her aunt. It was on October 14, the following day when she revealed to her senior woman teacher who also reported the matter to the headteacher and they proceeded to open up a police case.

Upon his arrest and interrogation at Police, Dr. Eron is said to have accepted giving the victim a bottle of water but denied having had sexual intercourse with her.

The Chief Magistrate Nantege upon listening to the evidence provided by the prosecution, committed Dr. Eron to high court for trial.

Agnes Aserait, the chief executive officer of Reach a Voice Uganda (RAVU), an association advocating for the rights of children and adolescents with disabilities has appreciated the Police and Court for having helped the innocent disabled student to get justice.

Aserait added that they are not ready to give up until the final judgement in this case is given saying they will keep following it up even in the high court.

“We need justice for our disabled girls in Uganda, we are not ready to be compromised. We want this case to be an example to others out there who are defiled and just keep quiet. We need to protect the victims because of their vulnerability,” Aserait said.

Morgan Amin Muhamood, the father to the victim did not hold back the tears as he heard the court reading what Dr. Eron did to his daughter.
