More than 100 suspected criminals have been arrested in an intelligence-led operation within the Kampala Central Business District (CBD).

The operation jointly conducted by the police, army, military, and intelligence agencies was carried out in areas of Kisekka Market, Burton Street, Arua Park, Old Taxi Park, and Nakivubo channel, among others, on Thursday afternoon.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango said that the operation followed several complaints about an increase in petty crimes targeting travellers in the city centre. According to Onyango, the suspects were found with ladies’ bags, jewellery, drugs, and instruments used for breaking locks, in their possession.

He adds that a number of those arrested were categorized as habitual criminals who had just been bailed from court with bond papers requiring them to report back.  Onyango says that those in this category will be screened and immediately taken to court.
